Jefferson Beauregard Sessions III, born December 24, 1946, in Selma, Alabama, is an American politician and attorney known for his extensive career in law and conservative politics. Sessions began as an assistant U.S. attorney for the Southern District of Alabama (1975–1977), then served as the U.S. attorney for the same district from 1981 to 1993, appointed by President Ronald Reagan. In 1994, he was elected attorney general of Alabama and served until 1997. Sessions was elected to the U.S. Senate representing Alabama in 1996 and served from 1997 to 2017, becoming one of the Senate's most conservative members. His Senate record includes opposition to immigration reform, the Affordable Care Act, and certain criminal justice reforms. In 2017, Sessions was appointed as the 84th U.S. attorney general under President Donald Trump. His tenure was marked by a hardline stance on immigration and drug enforcement policies. However, his relationship with Trump became strained after Sessions recused himself from the investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election, leading to his dismissal in 2018. Sessions resigned the day after the 2018 midterm elections. After leaving the Justice Department, Sessions sought to return to the Senate, running unsuccessfully for his former seat in 2020. Throughout his career, Sessions emphasized conservative social and economic policies, including strong law enforcement, limited government, and fiscal conservatism. He also served in the Army Reserve from 1973 to 1986, attaining the rank of captain. Sessions remains a significant figure in Alabama politics and conservative circles, known for his legal background, prosecutorial experience, and conservative policy positions[1][3][4][6].
